Synopsis

Seventy years apart, two women face the same quandary: where do we truly belong?

Singapore 2015: Scientist Nimita Sachdev lives in Singapore, hoping to stake out a new future and escape the past – as well as her matchmaking family. But rising anger against immigrants makes her place here uncertain. Also her aunts have a secret weapon: an eligible bachelor from Nimita’s past.

India 1944: Nimita Khosla aims for a future of rare adventure as a woman engineer. Times are changing in the last leg of the British Raj – but not fast enough. Her parents want the teenager to marry and make a new home for herself, amid growing calls for their country to split along religious lines.

Where do the Nimitas truly belong? This is a story about love, loyalty, and shared spaces, about whether the ideas of “yours” and “mine” can be replaced by “ours”.

Advance Praise

“Akshita Nanda’s Nimita’s Place weaves a dual narrative about a central pair of richly-drawn protagonists with similar names but separate timelines; transitioning ambitiously between India and Singapore to express a tender interconnectedness that simultaneously reveals their differences as well as the commonality of their hopes and dreams across time and space.” — Cyril Wong, Judge, Epigram Books Fiction Prize 2017
